Malheureusement, cette situation n&rsquo;est pas rare pour de nombreuses personnes atteintes de spondylarthrite.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgina a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 ressentir des raideurs, des douleurs dorsales et un inconfort g\u00e9n\u00e9ral au d\u00e9but de sa vingtaine. Tout au long de ses trente et quarante ans, elle fait face \u00e0 des douleurs chroniques et \u00e0 des raideurs dans la colonne vert\u00e9brale et le cou, ainsi qu&rsquo;\u00e0 de graves tendinites d&rsquo;Achille, fasciites plantaires et enth\u00e9sites dans les c\u00f4tes, les coudes, les genoux et les hanches. Elle a essay\u00e9 les AINS, la physioth\u00e9rapie et d&rsquo;innombrables autres traitements, mais rien n&rsquo;a fait de diff\u00e9rence significative.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elle souffre \u00e9galement de la maladie de Crohn, qui n&rsquo;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 diagnostiqu\u00e9e pendant longtemps. Au fil des ans, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 orient\u00e9e vers trois rhumatologues diff\u00e9rents au Royaume-Uni et au Canada avant de consulter un quatri\u00e8me sp\u00e9cialiste. Apr\u00e8s avoir v\u00e9cu pendant des d\u00e9cennies avec les sympt\u00f4mes de la spondylarthrite ankylosante, elle a finalement re\u00e7u le diagnostic de la spondylarthrite ankylosante en 2020, \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge de 52 ans. Aujourd&rsquo;hui, Georgina pense qu&rsquo;un diagnostic pr\u00e9coce aurait fait une \u00e9norme diff\u00e9rence dans sa qualit\u00e9 de vie.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; Unfortunately, this isn't uncommon for many people living with spondyloarthritis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgina first started experiencing stiffness, back pain, and general discomfort in her early twenties. Throughout her thirties and forties, she dealt with chronic pain and stiffness in her spine and neck, along with severe Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and enthesitis in her ribs, elbows, knees, and hips. She tried NSAIDs, physiotherapy, and countless other treatments, but nothing made a significant difference.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233117\":false,\"134233118\":false,\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":1,\"335551620\":1,\"335559685\":0,\"335559737\":0,\"335559738\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She also has Crohn's disease, which went undiagnosed for a long time. Over the years, she was referred to three different rheumatologists in the UK and Canada before finally seeing a fourth specialist. After decades of living with SpA symptoms, she was finally diagnosed with AS in 2020 at the age of 52. Looking back, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgina believes early detection would have made a huge difference in her quality of life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><h4><strong>Challenges on the Path to Diagnosis\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4><p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"-45px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><h4>\u00a0<\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the years, Georgina heard dismissive comments like:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\"It can't be that bad.\"<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\"Women don't get AS very often.\"<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\"Your X-ray looks fine, so you don't have it.\"<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first time she had uveitis, she was told it was viral, even though she had decades of AS symptoms, a family history of the disease, and tested positive for the HLA-B27 marker.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_image src=\"https:\/\/sparthritis.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_5332.jpg\" title_text=\"IMG_5332\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"-35px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<span data-contrast=\"auto\">After years of frustration, Georgina gave up searching for answers. But things changed when she experienced recurrent uveitis for several years on top of her long history of back, neck, and hip pain, as well as chronic enthesitis. Given all these factors, plus her HLA-B27 status and her father's AS diagnosis, she was referred to a rheumatologist at age 50. It was a long wait for an appointment and then for an MRI, but by the fall of 2020, Georgina finally received her diagnosis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.27.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><h4><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW118415055 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW118415055 BCX8\">Life After Diagnosis<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW118415055 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not being diagnosed for so long had a huge impact on Georgina, both physically and emotionally. But since finally getting diagnosed, her life has changed for the better. It hasn't been an easy road, and she still has bad days and flare-ups, but things have improved significantly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Starting biologic treatment shortly after her diagnosis made a huge difference. Her symptoms eased enough that she could even think about exercising again, something that had felt impossible for years. Before treatment, Georgina had to give up many activities, but now she's slowly reclaiming them and even trying new ones. Being able to do these things after so many years of limitations still feels surreal and overwhelming at times. After spending decades feeling like her body was working against her, it's incredible to finally experience what it can do. Last year, she participated in a 3km open-water swim race, something she's incredibly proud of. After so many years of limitations, this was a huge achievement, and Georgina is excited to do it again this year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Georgina was first diagnosed, she was in rough shape\u2014constantly in pain, stiff, and exhausted. Now, she manages her condition with a mix of biologic treatment and low-impact activities like dance, yoga, swimming, pilates, and nordic walking.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the biggest game-changers for Georgina has been Yoga for AS. It has transformed how she manages her symptoms, helping her build strength, flexibility, and overall well-being. Symptoms vary widely, and disease progression is unpredictable. Most people don't realize that things like eye inflammation, Crohn's disease, sacroiliac pain and stiffness, and tendonitis can all be connected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgina understands the depression and fatigue that come with chronic pain, stiffness, and exhaustion. Connecting with supportive communities, like her local support group and the Yoga for AS community, has been a game-changer. The upside is that it finally provides answers, sometimes after years or even decades of unexplained symptoms, so you can start managing the disease more effectively.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The key is having access to good information.
